Gestational Diabetes Mellitus meeting

AAPH in partnership with the Tanzania Diabetes Association and Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health convened a one day meeting on Gestational Diabetes in January 2015 in Dar es Salaam. This meeting brought together a wide range of about 55 experts from the fields of health, nutrition, policy and research to collaboratively discuss key issues around GDM at both the global and Tanzanian contexts. Like many other African countries, Tanzania has made significant strides and has secured renewed commitments and efforts in improving maternal and child health overall. However, the escalating levels of NCDs including GDM, brings along different challenges such as on how to effectively integrate NCD programing with the reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) programs to ensure a continuum of care that will lead to improved health outcomes for women and children even with existing limited resources. On the same note, since there are no existing guidelines for management of GDM in Tanzania, this meeting enabled brain storming of opportunities and challenges of GDM within the country’s existing health system as well as on potential research opportunities that can inform policy along NCDs including GDM.
